Lafayette woman paints with thread, creating art through embroidery: Acadiana Makers
Hi there! Welcome to Artemis-Unravelled. I am Marie Palmer. I have been embroidering since I was 8 years old when my mom and godmother taught me. My first project was the hem of pillowcase. I remember it had two white geese and a bouquet of flowers with a cornflower blue bow tying them all together. Not at all what inspires me these days, but it was a great start.
After a long break, I have been practicing a more contemporary version of this ancient art form for the last 8 years. I am intrigued by the use of color to create depth and enjoy using a rainbow of colors in many of my pieces. I try to capture the sensuousness of the human figure, making curves out of tiny straight lines.
Artist Statement
In an age of computers and automation, Marie Palmer uses a humble needle and thread to create complex and expressive images on fabric. The labor intensive art takes weeks to create a single piece, sometimes stitching multiple layers of fabric together to form visually interesting textures that delight the eye and entice you to touch it.
Marie Palmer uses embroidery, traditionally a women's craft, to intuitively explore her personal mythologies, self perception, spiritual journey, and evolving personal relationships. The sacred feminine and the natural world are featured prominently in her work as well as common domestic and family life.
I'd love to hear from you so drop me a line in the box below. Thanks for stopping by!
